Noninvasive Body Contouring: Expertise Is Key

Las Vegas – At the recent Cosmetic Bootcamp (CBC) meeting for extenders in core cosmetic disciplines, Susan Van Dyke, M.D., offered advice for choosing a noninvasive fat reduction device.

When selecting a “starter” device, she said, “The best starter is going to be the most popular one, because all the patients know about it. It’s hard to start with a machine that doesn’t have a buzz going for it because then you have to convince patients why it’s better than the one that they see in every magazine.” Because the CoolSculpting device is expensive and requires consumables, she added, the “best” device is not necessarily the most economical.

Sometimes, Dr. Van Dyke added, it’s all about how a particular practitioner uses a particular device. In her hands, “CoolSculpting gives a great result. But the clinic down the street that only has one applicator and only does one treatment is going to get a terrible result.” But if the same clinic provides Vanquish noncontact RF treatment with frequent maintenance sessions, she said, they may provide good results with this equipment. Dr. Van Dyke is a Paradise Valley, Arizona-based dermatologist.
